The New York Knicks waived point guard Brandon Jennings on Monday after Jennings expressed his desire to team management to play for a playoff contender, per Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated.

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News is also reporting that the Knicks could next waive Derrick Rose, who they were heavily shopping in trade talks last week. Releasing both Jennings and Rose would open up the door for Ron Baker and Justin Holiday to play more, while also giving playing time to guard Chasson Randle, who was signed after Jennings was let go.

Randle has appeared in 8 NBA games this season for the Philadelphia 76ers and averaged 5.3 points per game on 46% shooting from the field and 40% from three-point range prior to being waived by the 76ers on February 23. The 24-year-old Randle now has a partially guaranteed two-year pact with the Knicks worth up to $1.4 million.

Jennings, who signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Knicks last off-season appeared in 58 games (11 starts) for Knicks this season and averaged 8.6 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game. Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek told reporters that Jennings wanted to play more minutes per game, and Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical stated that the Knicks weren’t happy with Jennings mindset during this season.

The teams that have expressed the most interest in Jennings so far are the Washington Wizards and the Charlotte Hornets. Washington is seeking a better backup point guard behind John Wall, while the Hornets could also use an upgrade behind Kemba Walker with Ramon Sessions out. Charlotte recently signed Briante Weber to a ten-day deal, so that likely means the Wizards are the favorite for Jennings.

One thing that has become increasingly clear for the Knicks is that they are looking to upgrade at both starting and backup point guard, which is why Rose could also be dealt his walking papers soon. If New York goes the same way with Rose as they did with Jennings, they were almost certainly draft a point guard and then sign a veteran backup.

Veteran point guards this summer include Aaron Brooks, Raymond Felton, Beno Udrih, Shelvin Mack, and Ty Lawson.
