Mariota Named Week 1 AFC Offensive Player of the Week, Beating out Gronk

Here’s a good way to get your career started, featuring Marcus Mariota.

The rookie quarterback was named the AFC’s player of the week after throwing four touchdowns and recording a perfect passer rating in the Titans 42-14 win over number one overall pick Jameis Winston and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mariota didn’t put a lot of stock into his performance after the game, telling reporters that it’s just the first of 16 games.

“It means we’re 1 and 0,” Mariota said. “For me, it’s taking it one day at a time and just executing to the best of my abilities. It’s a good start for us, but it’s the first game. We have to continue to get better and not focus on stats.”

Mariota topped Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski in voting for the award.
