The Miami Marlins have placed starting shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, per an official announcement from Miami on Sunday.
In a corresponding roster move, the Marlins have recalled infielder J.T. Riddle from Triple-A New Orleans to take Hechavarria’s spot on the 25-man active MLB roster. When Riddle first steps into the batter’s box for the Marlins this season, it will be his major league debut.
With Martin Prado already on the disabled list for the fish to start out the 2017 season, you can expected the Marlins to be careful with Hechavarria’s oblique aliment, even though the severity of the strain isn’t yet known.
Even with Riddle now on the roster, Miguel Rojas is likely slated to receive the majority of the fill-in innings for Hechavarria. The 25-year-old Riddle can also play second base and third base for the Marlins if need be, where Dee Gordon and Derek Dietrich are currently playing alongside Justin Bour in the Marlins infield.
Since he was acquired by the Marlins in the blockbuster Jose Reyes trade with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012, Hechavarria has provided Miami with both slick fielding and questionable hitting at times. He has posted a fielding percentage above 96 in each season with Miami, and is a career .254/.291/.335 hitter.
