For the first time in his Major League career, Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout is headed to the disabled list. The club is placing Trout on the ten-day version of the list, with a torn left thumb ligament.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times is reporting that surgery is an option for Trout, and if he were to undergo surgery to repair the UCL ligament in his left thumb, he would be out approximately 5-8 weeks. Angels general manager Billy Eppier told the media that it will be a multi-week injury for Trout regardless.

The 25-year-old Trout sustained this particular aliment on Sunday in the team’s 9-2 loss to the Miami Marlins after sliding during a stolen base. To replace Trout on the 25-man active roster, the Angels have selected veteran outfielder Eric Young Jr. from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Young Jr. will transition into the fourth outfielder role for the Angels that was previously Ben Revere‘s when Trout was healthy. You can expect to see Kole Calhoun to continue getting the bulk of the action for the Halos in right field, while Cameron Maybin will play center field, sending Revere to left while Young Jr. is alternated in by Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

While the Angels are currently not in the playoffs and entered today 10.5 games back of the Houston Astros in the American League West, the injury to Trout will certainly make it harder for the Angels to hold 2nd place with the last place Oakland Athletics still only 2.5 games back of them. Per ESPN Stats and Info, when you take Trout’s stats out of the equation, the rest of the Angels team is batting .226 combined this season.

It was appearing as though Trout was going to runaway with his 3rd American League MVP award with a .337/.461/.742 batting line that featured 16 homers, 36 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases, but with today’s news, it might be time to open up the race for other candidates again.

When the Angels decide to formally announce the disabled list stint, it will end an impressive run for Trout. The run was that since the 2012 season, Trout had only miss 45 games out every possible game the Angels have played in, including the postseason.
