Stephen Strasburg will make $10.4 for the Washington Nationals in 2016 in his final year of arbitration, meaning that he will hit the free agent market in the winter of 2016.
This is usually a time where teams would like to get an extension done with each other, especially a pitcher of Strasburg’s caliber. But according to Strasburg’s agent Scott Boras per Fox Sports, the Nationals and Strasbrug won’t be talking extension, for now, at least.
From Fox Sports:
Strasburg’s agent, Scott Boras, confirmed to FOX Sports on Monday that the sides aren’t in active talks about a contract extension as spring training begins. It’s highly unlikely that will change before the season is over.
“We amicably agreed to a one-year deal (for 2016),” Boras said. “He’s going to pitch, and we’ll see where it goes from there. It’s something we’ll be discussing at the end of the year.”
Strasburg went 11-7 with a 3.46 earned run average and 155 strikeouts over 127.1 innings of work for the Nationals in 2015. He is projected to be the Nationals’ number two starter behind Max Scherzer.
