The Los Angeles Rams have fired head coach Jeff Fisher with just three games remaining and the Rams sitting at 4-9 on the year, per an official announcement from the team earlier Monday.

The Los Angeles Rams have relieved Jeff Fisher from head coaching duties, the team announced today.

“Making a decision such as this – especially during the season – is one of the most difficult in sports,” said Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke. “I have great respect for Jeff as a coach, person, father and friend.

“He has worked tirelessly despite some challenging circumstances. He played an integral role in helping this team make history in returning the NFL to Los Angeles, and we always will be grateful for his commitment and dedication to our organization.

“However, this is the right time to make a change as our performance has not lived up to my or our fans’ expectations. We all are focused on improving as an organization and building a team that makes Los Angeles proud. Our mission is to celebrate a Super Bowl title with our fans in Los Angeles. Today is the first step to bringing us closer to that goal.”

Fisher was hired as head coach of the Rams in 2012 and has amassed a record of 31-45-1 in nearly five seasons.

The firing of Fisher comes just one day after the Rams were blown out by the Atlanta Falcons 42-14, the 165th loss of Fisher’s NFL career that tied Dan Reeves for the most in NFL history by a head coach.

John Fassel, the Rams special teams coach, will be the team’s interim coach for their final three games. Los Angeles has a short week to prepare under Fassel, as they will play in Seattle against the Seahawks on Thursday night.

“I think Coach Fassel carries tremendous respect from our players and carries tremendous respect from our coaches,” Rams Executive President of  Football Operations Kevin Demoff said. “He’ll bring tremendous energy. And this is about getting the most out of our group for the last few games.”

Fisher addressed the players shortly after he was given the news, leaving the locker room crushed to receive the news. Fisher had the utmost respect from all of his players.

“I think I speak for the whole team when I say he was very well-liked and very giving,” quarterback Jared Goff said. “I mean, he treated us the right way. He treated us the way we’re supposed to be treated, and in return, we didn’t do enough for him. And that’s really what it comes down to.”

The 58-year-old Fisher posted a 31-45-1 record in his Rams career. The Rams finished 7-8-1 in Fisher’s first season in 2012, 7-9 in 2013, 6-10 in 2014, 7-9 in 2015, and as previously mentioned, 4-9 in 2016 prior to his firing.
