Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press is reporting that Bosh’s potential blood clot is not like the one that made him miss the remainder of the season last year and that he will undergo further tests this week:

Bosh will spend “the next few days” reviewing options and no determination will be made about his playing status until he goes through more tests and evaluation, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Monday night. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither the All-Star forward nor the Heat have revealed the concerns publicly.

The fact that Bosh remained in Toronto, and was active over the course of the weekend, suggests he’s at least optimistic that the problem — whether it’s a clot or not — can be managed. He was on the bench for the All-Star Game, was in uniform for the team photo session pregame, accompanied Wade to a dinner that honored Kobe Bryant on Saturday night and moved around without any obvious difficulty.

Last year, that wasn’t the case.

“I couldn’t walk anywhere,” Bosh said in September, describing how the clot affected him. “I was in too much pain.”

Bosh has taken precautions over the last year to try and prevent the recurrence of a clot, including partnering with Janssen Pharmaceuticals — the maker of the commonly used blood thinner Xarelto — to educate people about the risks. After the clot last season was found, Bosh started taking that blood thinner for several months as part of his recovery.

Athletes in contact sports typically cannot play while taking blood thinners.

Miami Heat star Chris Bosh withdrew from the NBA’s three-point contest and the NBA All-Star Game due to what was originally diagnosed as a calf injury, but according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Heat have even bigger concerns about Bosh’s health now:

The Heat was concerned on Monday about another potentially serious health situation involving Chris Bosh, multiple sources said.

Bosh missed Sunday’s All-Star game with a strained calf and returned to Miami for additional tests. A person in touch with the Heat’s front office said a worrisome problem surfaced Monday, beyond merely a strained calf. Another source said his life was not at risk.

Asked directly if Bosh had been diagnosed with a blood clot in his calf, agent Henry Thomas responded by text: “Too soon for all of that…. Too soon to report that.”

The Heat did not comment.

If Bosh, 31, is diagnosed with a blood clot in his calf, he would need to take blood thinners that would preclude him from having physical contact and would thus sideline him indefinitely. Last year, Bosh was on blood thinners for seven months.

He said at the time that if the clots returned, he would not be required to take blood thinners for the rest of his life.

Bosh missed eight games last season due to a calf injury, then returned to play 21 games, but had problems breathing, leading to a blood clot that kept him out the rest of the season. So far this year, he had played in every Heat game through the all-star break. He looked on track to play this Friday for the Heat, but now it’s looking grim.

Bosh was told that he had a “fairly low risk” of getting another blood clot by doctors last summer. Bosh said he was optimistic that the calf injury wasn’t blood clot related over the weekend:

“As an athlete, we try to keep going with some things, treating it,” Bosh said. “But it just lingered. And I didn’t feel it was wise to continue to push it, especially with this elongated week that we have off. I just wanted to make sure I was taking the necessary precautions and being a good professional.”

Bosh is in his sixth year with the Heat, averaging 19.1 points per game and 7.4 rebounds. He signed a five-year $118 million deal with the Heat in July of 2014.
