Wil Myers will be staying with the San Diego Padres for the long haul.

The 26-year-old Myers has agreed to a massive six-year, $83 million extension with San Diego, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

This deal will include an option in it, meaning that the extension could lost for a duration of seven years. The contract, once signed, will become the largest deal in Padres franchise history, surpassing the four-year, $75 million contract that was handed out to James Shields in 2015.

Myers, who made $523,900 last season, will see his new contract cover his three remaining arbitration years, as well as what would’ve been his first four years as free agent for the first time in his career.

“It’s been a really good process,” San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller said recently of the contract talks with Myers and his agency. “Overall, I think both sides have been really straightforward in terms of what’s important to both parties. That’s the way to make a long-term relationship work. When you’re trying to do a multiyear deal, an extension on a player that’s really talented, there’s got to be give and take both ways, and so far that’s the way the negotiation has gone.”

San Diego acquired Myers via trade in December 2014 from the Tampa Bay Rays, and he finally had a breakout season in 2016 after an injury-plagued season that limited him to just 60 games in 2015.

Myers slashed .259/.336/.461 with 28 homers, 94 RBIs, 28 stolen bases, and a 3.2 WAR in 599 at-bats in the regular season, where he represented the Padres in both the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game.

Having Myers on-board gives the Padres a building block for the next contending team they are able to build. Prospects Anderson Espinoza, Manny Margot, Hunter Renfroe, and Josh Naylor have also shown flashes of being part of the Padres long-term future.
