The Brewers shut down Ryan Braun over the weekend shortly following his 0-5 two strikeout game versus the Cardinals.

Braun has been dealing with a herniated disc injury in his lower back, putting a hamper on his bounce back season after a nightmare 2014 where he was dealing with a thumb injury. With the Brewers out of contention this season, Braun will be getting back surgery four days after the Brewers wrap up their season against the Cubs in Milwaukee, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com

“Obviously I wanted to play, and I got back in there [Saturday], but I could tell that I was still hesitant and tentative, and that’s not the way you want to play,” Braun said. “Taking everything into consideration — where we’re at in the season, how many games we have left — we felt it was the right choice.”

Brewers manager Craig Counsell didn’t think Braun had a setback despite not recording a hit over the Brewers four game series.

“There’s been no setback; in fact, I think he’s improving. But we’re going to make sure he goes into the procedure as healthy as possible.”

Braun will stay with the Brewers throughout the rest of the season, and will travel home to Los Angeles on October 5th to undergo an MRI to make sure he didn’t worse his back. The earliest date for his surgery is expected to be October 8th.

Despite the back injury, Braun was hitting .342 over his last 33 games and recorded his fourth career 2o stolen base and 20 home run season. He was also named one of two Brewers all-stars in 2015, the sixth-time in his career and the first time since he lead the National League in home runs back in 2012.

“It was OK. It could have been better,” Braun said. “There’s certainly a lot of room for improvement. I’m proud I made it back to the All-Star Game. I’m happy that the second half was better than the first half, but I’m disappointed I wasn’t able to finish the year.

“I don’t do statistical goals. The only goal is to stay on the field and play as many games as possible, so from that standpoint I’m disappointed I wasn’t able to play more. And for us as a team, it’s been a challenging year for sure. A really challenging year.”

Braun finishes 2015 batting .285 with 25 home runs and 84 runs batted in. He was 11th in the National League in slugging percentage and 22nd overall in Major League Baseball.
