The Tennessee Titans used the number two overall pick to take former Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota during the 2015 NFL Draft. While many other rookies have already signed their rookie contracts, Mariota hasn’t, and it’s all because his contract says he can’t surf, something that Mariota, a native of Hawaii, really enjoys to do.
Per Adam Grice of the Endzone Score.com:
There is information circling that Mariota is concerned about a clause in the contract that forbids him from surfing both during the season and during the offseason. Whilst this gives the Titans organization the feeling of security knowing their offensive centerpiece is not going to be subjected to an unnecessary risks, it may distract the player moving forward.
Hopefully, the Titans and Mariota get this surfing issue out the way for the sake of the franchise and for the future of NFL talent. Regardless if Mariota makes them take the surfing ban out or not, he is expected to sign the contract no matter what.
