Tristan Thompson made a name for himself during the 2014-2015 NBA Finals with his impressive rebounding game and dunking game while Kevin Love was sidelined with a shoulder injury.
The Cavaliers were willing to give him a five-year, $80 million contract, but he wants a maximum contract, which would be $14 million more at $94 million. Just how serious is he about wanting this maximum contract? He won’t show up to any of LeBron James’ Cavalier workouts in Miami, which started yesterday.
Per Chris Haynes of the Plain Dealer:
Restricted free agent Tristan Thompson will not attend the assembly, Northeast Ohio Media Group was informed. With the 24-year-old in the midst of a lengthy contract stalemate with the club, he has elected not to appear….
NEOMG is told that Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, Anderson Varejao, J.R. Smith,Iman Shumpert, Joe Harris, Mo Williams, James Jones, Richard Jefferson and Sasha Kaun are expected to be on the scene in Miami.
It’s very likely that Thompson will sign the one-year, qualifying offer deal from the Cavaliers, and then bolt in free agency come 2016, betting on himself that teams will offer him a max deal.
Thompson averaged 8.5 points, 8 rebounds, and .7 blocks per game with the Cavs last season.
