When Robert Griffin III was ready to turn pro in 2012, the Cleveland Browns were interested in the former Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor.

The Browns of course didn’t land Griffin III like they might have hoped, but they now have the chance too after the Redskins cut Robert Griffin III to start off their free agency period.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Browns are taking advantage of Griffin III being a free agent:

The Browns have been through a number of quarterbacks trying to find which one can lead their franchise with Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel being their most recent attempts. McCown was a journey man quarterback, so he likely couldn’t be the quarterback of the future, and as for Manziel, well, you know that story.

When it comes to the 2016 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns own the 2nd overall pick behind the Tennessee Titans. The quarterbacks available to draft are Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, Paxton Lynch, and Connor Cook. For the always rebuilding Browns, they might want to make sure they get it right when they decide between these QB’s and Griffin III.

In 2012, Griffin III won the Rookie of the Year Award over Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. Griffin III threw for 3,200 yards while rushing for 815 yards. He had a total of 27 touchdowns that year, but injuries have slowed down his career to this point.

Griffin III didn’t appear in a single game for the Redskins in 2015 while he watched Kirk Cousins have a career year as the teams 3rd string quarterback behind Cousins and Colt McCoy.

His last NFL season was in 2014 where he was limited to just nine games. He had a total of 1,870 all-purpose yards and 5 total touchdowns.

The Broncos and Jets are also the other teams that have been linked to Griffin III. Any of these three teams may be able to get Griffin III back on track in the NFL.
